Comparatives and Superlatives
We use comparative adjectives to compare two nouns. To form the comparative adjective, we add –er. In comparative sentences we use than: This cat is smaller than that cat. We use superlative adjectives to compare three or more nouns. To form the superlative adjective, we add –est: He is the tallest boy in the room. Rewrite each sentence using the correct form of the adjective. Example: Susy is (older/oldest) than Mary. Susy is older than Mary. 1.- Yesterday was the (colder/coldest) day this winter. ___________________________________________ 2.- Maria is the (smarter/smartest) girl in her classroom. ___________________________________________ 3.- My desk is (smaller/smallest) than yours. ___________________________________________ 4.- This towel is the (softer/softest) of all. ___________________________________________ 5.- The kitchen is (warmer/warmest) than the garage. ___________________________________________ With adjectives that end with an –e, just add –r for the comparative and –st for the superlative. With adjectives that end with a consonant and a –y, change the –y to –i and add –er or –est: silly sillier silliest With adjectives that end in a single consonant and a single vowel, double the final consonant and add –er or –est: big bigger biggest Write the comparative and superlative form of each adjective. comparative superlative 1.- thin __________ _________ 2.- fat __________ _________ 3.- fast __________ _________ 4.- brave __________ _________ 5.- pretty _________ _________ 6.- dark _________ _________ 7.- rich _________ _________ 8.- easy _________ _________ To form comparative and superlative adjectives with words of three or more syllables, we do not use –er and –est. For comparatives, use more and than: Mark is more intelligent than Robert. For superlatives, use the most: Susy is the most intelligent of all the students. *Do not use –er or –est when using more or most. In each sentence, mark the correct form of the adjective. Example: Tania is (more happy/happier) than John. 1.- This is the (more interesting/most interesting) book in the library. 2.- Richard is (more tall/taller) than his father. 3.- Elena’s desk is the (most neat/neatest) one in her class. 4.- An elephant is the (bigger/biggest) animal in the zoo. 5.- Her sister is the (prettier/prettiest) of all the girls. 6.- A mouse is (smaller/smallest) than a hamster. 7.- That movie star is (more beautiful/most beautiful) than her sister. 8.- The clown was the (more funny/funniest) of all. Two adjectives change to completely new words to make the comparative and superlative forms. These adjectives are good and bad. Examples: This is a good book. | |
